On Thursday, the US House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed a bill that suspends admittance for 10,000 Syrian refugees into the United States, amid growing fears, particularly amongst conservatives, that some of those refugees might be ISIS plants. So here’s a message to the 242 Republicans and 47 Democrats who voted to block these refugees. Are you sitting down? You’ll want to take a seat…
You’re bigger cowards than France.
That’s right. I said it. If you’re afraid of Syrian and Iraqi refugees, if you voted against this bill or if you support this bill in any capacity, then you’re a coward. Not just any coward, mind you… you’re a bigger coward than the entire nation of France.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past week, you’re aware that France just suffered through the nation’s worst terrorist attack of all time, and their biggest loss of life since the second World War. The attack was carried out by ISIS, and immediately, many conservatives, egged on by the fear-mongering of a small handful of conservative French officials, concluded that the attacks came at the hands of terrorists posing as Syrian refugees.
But on Wednesday, despite the recent terrorist attack, French President Francois Hollande vowed that France will maintain their September pledge to take in 24,000 Syrian and Iraqi refugees… and even upped that number to 30,000, while also promising over $53 million in housing development for said refugees. Why? Because President Hollande isn’t as cowardly or weak spirited as American conservatives.
A Grave Insult
To most conservatives, nothing is quite as insulting as saying they’re more cowardly than France; after all, French cowardice has been a stereotype in the United States and England since World War II, and especially after France (correctly) bowed out of joining George W. Bush’s “coalition of the willing” for military action in Iraq — military action which helped give birth to ISIS — prompting some conservative lawmakers to poke jabs at France, like renaming French fries as “freedom fries.” Yeah, conservatives… that sure showed them! Changing the name of a food they didn’t even invent… that sure burned! Or was that just the grease from the fryer? Who cares! ‘MURKA!
But despite their suffering through a horrendous evening of terrorist attacks, and despite some in France blaming those attacks on Syrian refugees (we don’t actually know if any of the attackers were refugees, but there’s no evidence yet indicating they were), France is doubling-down on their commitment to help as many Syrian refugees as possible, the cost and the tiny threat be damned, because it’s quite frankly the right thing to do.
Terrorists Don’t Need To Pose As Refugees
Many conservatives rather naively believe that halting Syrian refugees from entering the country will prevent terrorist attacks, but there’s literally no evidence whatsoever that this would be the case. ISIS is determined to branch out with terrorist attacks all over the globe, particularly in Europe and the United States… and they don’t need to hide terrorists amongst refugees to make that happen, either.
On Thursday, ISIS released a new video threatening to attack more cities around the world, including a specific threat against New York City. They don’t need to sneak in jihadists among refugees… they likely already have terrorist cells up and running in the United States, who infiltrated by any number of other means, including legal ones, just as the 9/11 hijackers had and the Boston bombers had.
So what did Republicans in Congress just accomplish? Absolutely nothing, apart from ensuring that ten thousand Syrian refugees will continue to starve and struggle. Of course, given how conservatives often speak of Muslims during their Islamophobic tirades , we can probably safely assume they want those refugees to suffer. But one thing is certain, above all else… the House’s bill absolutely will not keep Americans safe in any way, shape, or form.
Congressional Republicans making big empty gestures and accomplishing f–k all? I suppose we shouldn’t expect anything less out of these cowardly nitwits.
